History of Fort Ord, California U.S.
1800s – Presidio of Monterey(POM) and Fort Ord Sites was inhabited by the Rumsen, Ensen and Calendarruc Indians, subsidiaries of Ohlone Indians. By the end of the 19th century Indian population had disappeared. 1917 - 15,809 acres purchased from the David Jacks family by the Army known as Gigling Reservation (named after German immigrants who had lived there).
1917 - The 76th Field Artillery (Horse drawn/nicknamed "Black Horse") and the 30th Infantry Regiment used Gigling Reservation (East Garrison) for maneuvers.
1919 - Calvary Commander John M. Jenkins set up Headquarters at the Presidio of Monterey and Gigling Reservation and the 11th Calvary arrived.
1933 - Gigling Reservation renamed Camp Ord after Major General Edward Otho Cresap Ord.
1940 - Camp Ord was renamed Fort Ord and became a permanent Army institution. Under the command of General Joseph Stilwell the 7th Infantry Division (ID) was activated consisting of the 2/76th Field Artillery (FA), 11th Calvary, 17th Infantry Regiment, 32nd and the 53rd Infantry, 31st FA, 19th and 39th Engineer Regiment, 1st Medical Regiment, 147th Artillery, 30th and 40th ID and more. The 3rd ID, 29th ID, 35th and 43rd Division were also trained prior to WWII embarkment, as well as many other Infantry Divisions as the war developed.
1941 - 2003: - $12,000,000 in construction costs preparing for World War II and an Additional 3,777 and 274.6 acres were added equaling 28,514 acres to Fort Ord by 1942. Fort Ord became one of the main WWII training bases and after the war became a processing center for the returning army personnel called, The 4th Replacement Training Center. Fort Ord continued to serve as a training base and replacement center throughout history for war defense. The Fort Ord Base closure in 1994 lead the way for California State University, Monterey Bay (1994) and many more opportunities including projected housing and university developments (2003) for the community, paving the path to a new frontier for the Monterey Peninsula, California U.S. 2022 - Demolition began |
